History in the Making at the NORRA Mexican 1000
History will be made at the 2025 NORRA Mexican 1000. NORRA created sanctioned off road racing in Baja back in 1967. Those original thrill seekers set off on an adventure that was largely unknown. They launched a sport that is still going strong today with those who love speed, thrills and the untamed majesty of the Baja peninsula. Many of the pioneers of off road racing bridged the gap from the origins in 1967 to the current NORRA Baja racing series. The icons that raced in both eras include Malcolm Smith, Bruce Meyers, Johnny Johnson, Walker Evans, Judy Smith, Bud Feldkamp, Parnelli Jones, Rod Hall and others.
At this year’s event held April 24th through May 2nd in Ensenada, Baja Mexico, Mike Pearlman will add his name to that exclusive list. With help from Meyers Manx, EMPI, GEM VW, Transaxle Engineering, Bilstein, Yokohama, Mobelwagen, JK Classic Buggies, Rugged Radios, Impact, Nacho Off Road Lighting, PRP Seats, Rebel Wire Harness, Sign Art Graphics, Amsoil, RLB and Vintage Car LEDs, Mike will anchor a team that will compete in the Pioneer Buggies class. After heading up the NORRA series with Race Director Eliseo Garcia for 15 years, Mike will now be experiencing the fruits of his labor. He has switched from one driver’s seat to another. Joining Mike in this effort is his team consisting of son Casey Pearlman, Sonya Kieslich, Paulina Kieslich, Richard Cushman, Lisa Charbonneau and the car’s builder John Kieslich.
The race car is a Remastered Classic Kit from Meyers Manx that matches Mike’s car from the Mexican 1000 in 1968. Through the remastering process developed by the Meyers Manx Design Department, they have preserved the artistry of Bruce Meyers for the 21st century consumer. It retains the original design, but takes advantage of modern day technology in construction and manufacturing. “The car has turned out beyond my expectations,” says Mike Pearlman. “It’s really, really nice. JK Classic Buggies has done a wonderful job building the car with help from a lot of people. I’m so grateful to everyone and excited for the race. I’m going to trade out the driver’s seat with my teammates so I can still wish everyone good luck and drop the green flag at the starting line. I don’t want to miss out on my favorite thing to do. We’ll see how the race goes, we have some tough competition.”
