Historic Truck Battle at the
NORRA Mexican 1000
There’s a battle brewing in the Historic Truck class at the 2025 NORRA Mexican 1000. The Historic Era is for tube frame, unlimited vehicles at least 20 years old. Many of the trucks that compete in the class were built by the best and have long racing histories. The trucks may have battled each other over 20 years ago and are still mixing it up today at NORRA. Some went through the transformation years that saw class 8 trucks, which were the top dogs of truck racing, transformed into the unlimited truck classes we see today. They represent a crucial era in off road racing development and innovation. We’ve seen trucks like the Russ Wernimont built Ford of Pedro Perezpliego and Larry Ragland’s Nelson and Nelson built truck “Arnold” taste victory at the Mexican 1000. Who will take the top spot this year?
One contender in the Historic Truck class is the “Black Diamond” Ford of Mark Post. Mark is a long time competitor with NORRA and has maintained a status as being the truck to beat in the Historic class. This year he brings a juggernaut team of drivers who are all icons in the sport. Mark will be joined by his teammate Brent Bauman and off road racing legends Larry Ragland, Rob MacCachren and Robby Gordon. This has got to be one of the most experienced and successful group of drivers ever assembled. They will be behind the wheel of an incredible machine originally built by Don Fair, Dave Forbes, and Ed Buffington for Robby Gordon.
Competing against the formidable Black Diamond are the teams of Tim Kunch and Corey Jabour in a 1976 Chevy Silverado and Bob Briggs and co-driver Terry Peregoodoff in their 1990 Chevrolet. Can you imagine going up against the likes of Post, Ragland, MacCachren and Gordon? Bob Briggs is not intimidated. He’s got lots of racing experience with NORRA and competing in this very truck back in the 1990’s with Jimmie Johnson behind the wheel. When Briggs saw this truck come up for sale, he knew it was the one he needed for NORRA. Before Briggs and Johnson raced the truck, it was originally built and raced in class 8 by Dale White. Dale’s team was called “White Lightning.” Which do you think is more powerful, White Lightning or a Black Diamond? The Dale White Chevrolet truck was entirely refurbished to modern safety standards last year by Lafortune Race Cars in order to compete. It was raced last year to get all the bugs out so it’s ready to take on the Mexican 1000 against the super team driving the Black Diamond.
The NORRA Mexican 1000 “Celebrates the Past, while Forging the Future.” No other race has a more diverse field of cars, trucks, buggies, motorcycles, and UTV’s competing. Entries span the entire history of over 50 years of offroad racing. In order to accommodate such a diverse collection of race vehicles, the overall classification structure is determined by the era of racing the vehicles competed in. That way, competitors can be matched against similar cars that all have the same technology.
NORRA’s rally format provides the rush of competition, but also allows participants to relax each evening in a unique location in Baja. The spectacular beauty, challenging terrain and distinctive Baja culture provides the greatest Baja racing adventure. After experiencing the Mexican 1000 just once, you too will be hooked.
