Safari Class Expands; Legendary "Big Oly"  Entered to Run the 2022 Yokohama NORRA Mexican 1000 Presented By Method Race Wheels!

AGUA DULCE, CALIF. The Yokohama NORRA Mexican 1000 presented by Method Race Wheels puts the main emphasis on having fun. Baja is fun, parties are fun, and going fast is fun! The Safari class is also fun! We created it so people who don’t have race cars can still participate. The NORRA Safari Categories (Slow Baja Safari, and Rapido Safari) are for OEM vehicles, modified stock vehicles, and pre-approved classic/vintage race vehicles. For instance, the legendary Big Oly race bronco that Parnelli Jones drove to victory in 1971 will be entered in the Safari class this year.

The Safari class is proving to be very popular, and due to overwhelming interest, we have expanded it at the Mexican 1000. There are now the two options for participants. There is the Slow Baja Safari guided by experienced Baja aficionado Michael Emery; for those who wish to take it easy, and the new Rapido Safari class led by former Marine Dave Watts who is experienced with every type of vehicle that burns fuel and flings dirt. Whether you are an experienced Baja traveler, or first timer; you are in good hands with either of these gentlemen.

The Slow Baja Safari class is unique to NORRA. It is a guided tour of Baja that puts you right in the mix of the Mexican 1000 or NORRA 500. You will take the green flag each day, follow the most scenic sections of the racecourse, and have time for photos, scenic vistas, and local fare. You will see the Baja that only the most seasoned Baja travelers know. From spectacular missions, to fabulous street tacos, your guide will make sure to get you there and get you across the finish line each night. Helmets and Race Suits are not necessary in this class, but we invite you to check the Safari Rules on the link below.

The Rapido Safari class is also unique to NORRA, but unlike the Slow Baja Class, this group will take the green flag each day and follow longer sections of the course with a faster pace and in more challenging terrain. The Rapido Group is perfect for those with modified street legal vehicles that are more comfortable going as fast as 60 mph on dirt roads. There will be food stops along the way and fun challenges every day. Helmets and race suits are not required on this class either, but we invite you to check the Rapido Safari Rules on the link below to get ready for the adventure.

The Mexican 1000 is known as “The Happiest Race on Earth!” for a good reason. There are incredible people competing, and you will meet great people along the way. No other event offers the rich history, amazing tales, interesting characters, and spectacular backdrops that the NORRA Mexican 1000 delivers. Every stage of the rally has its own unique flavor. Together they encompass the unique challenges and incredible beauty of the Baja Peninsula. The challenge creates great camaraderie amongst participants. After a day exploring Baja, you can sit around the camp fire, or belly up to the bar with industry titans, regular Joes, or racing icons. The stories you create will be the subject of tales told in the future. Both classes are filling up fast so don’t wait; go to www.norra.com to find out everything else that you will need to fully enjoy either of the safari classes during the Yokohama NORRA Mexican 1000 presented by Method Race Wheels.

ABOUT NORRA

Beginning in 2010, the National Off Road Racing Association (NORRA) began promoting a rebirth of the NORRA Mexican 1000 rally. The unique off-road rally was co-created by promoter Mike Pearlman to consist of special stages (unlimited speed timed stages in the dirt) linked together by controlled speed liaison / transit sections (highway). The one-of-a-kind, once-a-year, five-day rally includes vintage off-road vehicles and motorcycles, as well as modern pre-runners, trucks, buggies, UTVs, bikes and desert Rally Raid cars.

Pearlman’s late father Ed and others established the first running of the NORRA Mexican 1000 off-road rally in November of 1967, which eventually became internationally recognized and evolved into the Baja 1000 in the mid-1970's.

NORRA enjoys corporate partnerships with Yokohama Tire, Method Race Wheels, South Point Hotel & Casino, Bilstein Shock Absorbers, RIGID, STEEL-IT, Slime, Multitool USA, Satélite del Norte, Biltwell, Cervecería Transpeninsular, PCI Race Radios, Schampa, Optima Batteries, K&N, Horsepower Ranch, Jimmy Lewis, RMS, Baja Bush Pilots, The Fab School, Mag7 Pits, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF), B3KREATIV, and many more.
